Diary of a Railroad Man (Copyright Don Charbonneau)

I’ve been a railroad man
Since fifteen years old
I worked on section crews
All over this land
I got my start in Burnaby
It was in 1953
I moved on up to Ontario
Got a job in Chapleau
I met a girl in Hornepayne
She was good to me
I was young and restless then
And railroad was my life
Kept on moving down the line
Worked in North Bay
I was a brakeman there on the CPR
On the CPR

I started driving diesels
When I was thirty five
I wrecked up there in Marathon
I almost lost my life
Years kept on rolling by
Freight train too
I’ve been retired now
Going on twenty years
I just got the news
I’ve reached the end of my line
I’ll be leaving for that roundhouse in the sky
In the sky

There’s a young mother on my street
With two small kids
Treasures I never had
I’ll leave her this old house
And everything I own
And get on board that train to take me home(2)
